Brees signed a five-year deal that can be voided down to two years, according to ESPN. The quarterback will make $20 million in 2016 and $24.25 million in 2017.
A press conference was held to announce the signing, where Brees said, “I plan to play for longer than two years… My mindset going into this was to be able to secure a deal that would take for me as long as I plan on playing. But this is what was in the best interest of the team, so that’s why it was a two-year deal.”
This seems to be a great compromise between Brees and the Saints. Brees, 37, wanted a longer deal but the Saints were reportedly unwilling to give him more than 2 years. It helped the Saints position that Peyton Manning had such a bad season last year, showing how fast older QBs can fall off the map. So, the two sides compromised by making it a shorter deal, but with more money.
This looks like a win-win for everyone.
