Saints release RB C.J. Spiller after only 1 year with the team

CJ Spiller is gone. After signing a 4 year, $16 million dollar deal in the 2015 off-season, the Saints’ most exciting free agent acquisition of that year is gone after only one year in New Orleans. Cutting ties with Spiller meant the Saints had to take a dead-money hit of $4.5 million in 2016 and $2.5 million in 2017, adding to their already league-high dead money level.

Spiller was never able to find a consistent role on the team, and was not even active for last week’s game against the Raiders.  Spiller has been quoted as saying he was surprised by the move but has no hard feelings for the Saints.
